Critical Spares Management

Whilst creating and maintaining a spare part inventory for issues that haven’t happened may seem counterintuitive to managing operating costs, keeping a critical spares stock reduces downtime, engineer travel time and guards against price rises.

Proactive, not reactive

Most company strategies towards the maintenance of their boiler are reactive, as is their purchasing of parts. Whilst a reactive approach to a breakdown may work, proactively stocking critical spares can cut the time and costs associated with fixing issues.

Inventory Control

You don’t have to stock an all-encompassing parts inventory to be effective and stocking the most commonly required parts isn’t a guessing game either – many distributors and installers can advise you on the parts you should stock.

3 common mistakes when purchasing critical spare parts:

A critical machine part is not necessarily a critical spare part.

Always contact a trusted maintenance provider and ask for advice – an experienced engineer can tell you which parts are more likely to fail and therefore which are most beneficial to stock.

Delivery time isn’t considered.

When deciding on which critical spares to invest in, both delivery time and stock availability are key things to consider – how fast can a supply get the part to site if a breakdown happens and how often are distributors out of stock of the items? Again, asking for advice from maintenance professionals is key in making decisions.

A presumption that everything has to be new.

Critical Spares Inventory can be thought of like a spare tyre, it doesn’t need to be brand new and top of the line to get you to a garage…

Some parts can be purchased second hand – they may have been incorrectly ordered, or possibly broken parts which had been removed and had faults fixed. A second hand part may not have the lifespan of a brand new part, but kept in stock, an older piece of machinery could be fitted to keep your heating system running until a new part arrives and can be swapped out.

It could be worth asking your maintenance provider if some parts that are being replaced could be repaired for your critical spares inventory.
